Abstract

                     The dissertation entitled ‘Buddhist Counseling Model According to Kalyanamitra’ consists of 3 objectives as: 1) to study the concept of Kalyanamitra in Theravada Buddhism, 2) to investigate the counseling pattern in line with the physiologist and in the Buddhist principle and 3) to present the Buddhist counseling model based on the concept of Kalyanamitra.  The research was conducted through the documentary research method and all data were carried out from the Tipitaka, Commentaries, textbooks and related research work included interviewing the luminaries.  The data gathered is analyzed and synthesized of which the results were explained in the form of descriptive presentation.

                  The term Kalyanamitra stands for a prototype of goodness in all actions viz., physical, verbal and metal. In addition, one who undertakes in the good conductof the body, speech and thought is considered as a qualified person of instructing the benefit of another. In addition, The Kalyanamitra is not only considered as an eligible person of being a guidance of benefit and goodness to others, but also being as a developmental foundation of all human beings. The Buddha has confirmed the importance of Kalyanamitra as the establishment of wholesomeness and being the factor of the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism.

                  Regarding to the integration of the counseling pattern in line with the psychology and in the Buddhist principle, it was found the model of the Buddhist counseling as 1) the aim of Buddhist counseling consists of 3 aspects:1) Problem preventing, 2) Heal people who suffer and 3)sustainable happiness. The Buddha’s personality in counseling can be described as: 1) Good personality, 2) having the word of comfort, 3) unshakable mind, 4) consistently, 5) Observant and 6) mercy among living beings. The Buddhist consultation process has 5 Buddhist ways: 1) creating the relationship, 2) understanding of oneself and investigating the cause of the problem, 3) consultation process, 4) implementation and 5) following-up. However, the Buddhist counseling is a process that support to ignite the intellectual power of the Buddhists to become the enlightened one and get rid of all sufferings.

               Regarding to the Buddhist counseling based on the Kalyanamitra concept, the process consists of 4 steps as: 1) Faith Development, 2) Mental Development, 3) Wisdom Development and 4) Peace Development. There are twelve guidelines for the consultant and a person who being consulted as follows: 1) Knowledgeable, 2) Analytic Insight, 3) Leadership, 4) Yearning on volunteering, 5) Advocating ideas, 6) Noble Truth, 7) Ambition, 8) Middle Ways, 9) Insight Development, 10) Thinking Wisely, 11) Right  Mindfulness and 12) Abandoning wrong view.

                  The central knowledge that's gained from the study, it has 2 central ideasviz., 1) Kalyanamitra Model, which presented the 12 guidance for the counselors and one whom being consulted. The model is based on the concept of being Kalyanamitra (being a good friend) that called Paratoghosa or another's utterance and Yonisomanasikāra or reasoned attention. And 2) The process of Buddhist counseling based on Kalyanamitra consists of 4 steps or it is called 4 ‘Sor Model’ as: 1) Faith Development, 2) Mental Development, 3) Wisdom Development and 4) Peace Development.
